The Diocese of West Buganda was created in the 1950s out of the Diocese of Namirembe. Back then West Buganda covered what is currently the Central Buganda Diocese, Mityana Diocese and the present day West Buganda Diocese. The diocese at present covers three political administrative districts of Masaka, Sembabule and Rakai, with a total area of 11,959 square kilometres.

The diocese occupies the southern part of the central region of Uganda. Shores of Lake Victoria lie to the east of the diocese all along. Diocesan offices are at Kako, a location that is six miles to the east of Masaka town. This is also where the diocesan cathedral and the bishop's residence are located. The present bishop, Dr. Samuel Kefa Kamya is the fourth bishop and was enthroned in August 1999.

The diocese has seen little meaningful development since the 1950s, spiritually or materially. Spiritually the diocese, perhaps in line with the rest of the country, has only registered increasing moral degeneration. Economically the population has grown poorer; environmental degradation has assumed alarming scales: the rate of deforestation and encroachment on the area's wetlands have resulted in negative climatic changes with the threat of desertification becoming increasingly real. Negative climatic changes have led to poorer agricultural yields, leading to falling incomes and an ever widening poverty trap for ordinary people. The advent of AIDS/HIV has been one giant, tragic complication to the fortunes of this diocese. Currently an estimated three out of every ten children of school going age and below are orphans - the legacy of the AIDS/HIV disease in the diocese.
