The inhabitants of the Diocese are largely Baganda - the largest ethnic tribe in Uganda. Recently the Nyankore have settled in Rakai and Ssembabule Districts with a sprinkling of other Ugandan tribes in the towns performing various central Government tasks. We have an estimated 1.3 million people in the diocese of whom roughly 90% are Christians of different denominations. Of that number approximately half a million people are followers of the Anglican faith. We have 87 parishes and a total of 157 serving pastors. There are some 300 primary schools and another 17 Secondary schools under our church care. On the Health side the church runs six small dispensaries to help provide basic health services at affordable costs to the public. The Trans African highway from the Indian Ocean port of Mombasa in Kenya runs through the diocese to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda and Burundi to the West of the country. Most parts of the diocese can be reached during the dry season. Road transport, however, can be quite treacherous in the rainy season on most roads. Motorists with four wheel drive vehicles though, get around with little difficulty. |
