You open up your newspaper one morning and what do you read? "A one month old baby defiled-48 year old man arrested!" Very bad; and while you ponder about that, your neighbour reports that a friend's two year old son was defiled by their thirteen year old house girl!! Next day's story is about an 80 year old woman sexually assaulted by a man of 25, and a 78 year old man assaulting a girl of 8,and so on. And dear reader you think this is unimaginable and impossible? Hold your breath- your Sunday reporter has a series of stories to crown them all. "A fourteen year old child beheaded- head missing", or " Man arrested for selling away his child knowing it was going to be killed in sacrificial rituals", or "Suspected pick pocket burnt alive-saved by police in the nick of time". And if you thought hospitals were places to find kind and saintly people, read this: "Doctor injects HIV infected blood into patient". These stories and many more daily come up on front pages of our newspapers. They are symptoms of a sick society, a kind of moral degeneration no one should take lightly. These are clear signs of a people who have turned away from their living God. To confirm this, stories of devil worshipping abound, where even your respectable church going Christians are known to be attending sessions of worship to their ancestral gods. This situation is a real crisis to the church, a challenge of unprecedented magnitude. In such circumstances the committed Christian should fall back to the traditional line of defence: PRAYER. We are all challenged to pray for the intervention of the Holy Spirit in this society, first by holding the committed Christian firm and strong in the faith, unswayed by the storm. Second we must pray that Jesus, by His mercy, intervenes to save would-be victims from the hands of these cruel men and women. Thirdly we must pray that somehow God's Spirit intervenes to touch the hearts of these wicked people to change. We know that underlying these cruelties and shameful acts is the hand of the devil himself, but we also know that only our Lord Jesus has the capacity to deal with the devil most effectively, if only we pray. Thus we should pray that our Lord Jesus intervenes - soon. Together with prayer there is urgent need to carry out massive evangelical work in the diocese. We call on all our friends to come out and join hands with us to undertake this task. It can be time consuming to organise, calls for sacrifice in terms of time and resources, but the rewards in terms of the harvest for Christ are abundant. Please do not turn away - let the Lord use your talents and gifts for His work. The Christians of West Buganda will be most gratified to learn that somebody wants to come out and do some rescue mission work for Christ with them. |
